FAQ

Sintra questions, answered straight

The short version of everything in the guides — what people actually ask before they go.

Getting there

How do I get from Lisbon to Sintra?

By train from Rossio station in about 45 minutes, or from Oriente in about 50; tickets go on a reusable Navegante card. From Sintra station, bus 434 climbs to the Moorish Castle and Pena. Our guide to getting there compares every way in.

Can I drive to Pena Palace?

No. Private vehicles may not drive to Pena or the Moorish Castle, and the historic centre is limited to residents. Park at a peripheral car park such as Lourel and continue by bus 434 or on foot.

Getting around

Which bus goes to the palaces?

Scotturb's bus 434 serves the Moorish Castle, Pena and the National Palace; bus 435 serves Quinta da Regaleira, Seteais and Monserrate. A day ticket for both costs €13.50, with 8% off online; check current fares before you go.

Are tuk-tuks allowed in Sintra?

Yes, they still sell rides and tours, but the town has tightened the rules: the restrictions in force at Easter 2026 were kept for the summer. Ride-hailing cars may stop only at 12 signed pick & ride points. Agree a tuk-tuk price before you set off.

Tickets

Do I need to book Pena Palace in advance?

Pena palace tickets are for a set date and entry time, and you cannot go in early or late. As listed in October 2026 the Essential Visit costs €20 for adults; the park recommends an afternoon slot, when the palace has fewer visitors. See our palaces and tickets guide.

Is Quinta da Regaleira on the same ticket as Pena?

No. Regaleira is run by Fundação Cultursintra and sells its own timed tickets, up to €20 at face value, with a grace period of at most 1 hour after your slot.

Planning

How much of Sintra can I see in one day?

Two or three sights. The park's own walking route starts at the National Palace at 9:30, climbs to the Moorish Castle and finishes at Pena; our one-day guide has three realistic plans.

Booking

Day tour or on my own?

On your own you handle the train, the buses and Pena's timed slot. A tour from Lisbon does that for you and often adds Cabo da Roca and Cascais, but check which Pena ticket is included and how long you get there; the tours page compares them.
